Jay Ahr is the sum of many individual talents. People and personalities whose different skills and cultural backgrounds are orchestrated by Jonathan Riss. Jay Ahr’s future as a luxury fashion house depends on its ability to cultivate new talents and new expertise in every area of its operations (studio, workshop, industrial production, distribution, sales networks, retail, communication, ambassadors, muses etc.).
In the beginning was the dress. Not just a garment, but a flowing sculpture – the dress is a world in itself. It gives form to a woman’s body, demands an attitude, imposes a way of being. The dress exists on its own terms.
Jay Ahr is now in its 6th year of existence. Founded in Paris on 1 September 2005, it employees 15 people and is present in twenty countries on all five continents with over twenty sales outlets.
A venture that started out in 2005 as a small workshop measuring just 60 m2 where every phase of the business was conducted – design, manufacture and sale – now occupies a headquarters of 600 m2, with historic boutique, studio and design booths all under the same roof.
In 2008 Jay Ahr opened a boutique on Madison Avenue. Instinctively. New York occupies a unique place in the world of luxury goods. New York has always been a magnet for the families who shaped the history of the United States and the talented younger generations which succeeded them. A city which is the world’s leading marketplace and a hotbed of artistic creativity, where French luxury has always been in demand. Jay Ahr’s presence in New York offers a contemporary take on this dynamic: more than a point of sale, it’s a showcase for a particular vision of luxury.
In 2010, Jay Ahr made a dream come true. A dream it had cherished since the early days of the new millennium. China! The lure of the Orient, a place where two worlds meet: one, the made-in-China mythos with its reputation for low production costs, the other, the country’s enormous potential for the luxury goods sector. And spanning the two worlds, the history, culture and know-how that are the country’s biggest hidden treasures. It was in this third way that Jay Ahr saw its opportunity. Jay Ahr now produces in a Chinese village whose tradition in embroidery goes back over 400 years. The time-honoured techniques of the village’s craftsmen and women have been enriched by 3D design software developed by Jonathan Riss and Fashionlab.
Jay Ahr has built its reputation on synergies, willpower, experimentation, instinct and a certain vision of luxury. With limited resources but unlimited inspiration, Jay Ahr has worked to develop a creative but variegated universe of products. The very essence of contemporary luxury.
Jay Ahr makes history. It reflects today’s world with its technology and its dynamics of change. Phenomena which can be given objective expression. Dresses, accessories, embroideries, artistic and cultural development: all have their roots in a universe created by Jonathan Riss. Every new project is conceived as a narrative, every piece exists in dialogue with others. Bound by a strong creative vision, they abolish the frontiers between art and craft, past and future, the ephemeral and the timeless.
Like eloquence in language, a beautiful object only finds its true meaning when appreciated by others. Every Jay Ahr object is made to be looked at and admired, understood, used, kept, collected.
Jay Ahr makes clothes and accessories for women. Its dresses were its earliest success and remain the symbol of its vision of fashion. Its dresses encode the genetic signature of the brand: as iconic as the Birkin bag of Hermès and Chanel’s tweed jacket.
Accessories and satellite products offer variations on the basic themes and expand the sales offering. This dynamic continues today in the form of full ready-to-wear collections.
Luxury designer jewellery extends the expressive power of a special vision of fashion.
A certain way of living and travelling is the inspiration for new techniques and new materials: braided leather is the signature element of an entire collection of luggage, and opens new perspectives for future creations.
Special projects put craft expertise at the service of artistic creation.
The synergies emerging across different areas of activity constitute the added value of the creative project of Jay Ahr: its special vision of luxury.
